About Lupus It is estimated that approximately 30,000 Tennesseans and 1.5 million people are affected by lupus in the United States alone. Lupus affects mostly minority women of childbearing age, but can affect anyone including men and children. Lupus is a widespread disease that causes the immune system to become hyperactive and lose the capacity to distinguish the body's healthy cells from foreign invaders. Unfortunately, there is no cure for lupus. The Lupus Foundation of America is the nation's leading non-profit organization dedicated to finding causes of lupus, improved treatment methods and ultimately a cure for this devastating disease.
