  Children & the Elderly

Lupus occurs between the ages of 20 and 60 approximately 85% of the time.  Of the remaining 15% of lupus that occurs, there are 4 types of SLE. They are:

Neonatal Lupus:
Lupus in newborns is rare. The autoantibodies that are responsible for neonatal lupus may settle most often in the skin or heart.

Lupus in Childhood:
Lupus is usually severe in children and requires more aggressive management and monitoring.  80% of those with childhood lupus  develop organ threatening conditions.  Kidney disease is the most common problem. Most children live a normal life span.

Lupus in Adolescence:
This age group have the same manifestations as adults with lupus.
